This blog was created to bridge the distance between Mary (my mom) and Oli (me). I got married last year (2023) and have been living apart from my parents since then. We don't live near each other and I'm quite busy so it has been difficult for me to visit them or talk to them often. I do meet them every week, but it's not enough.
I thought it would be a good idea to maintain a joint blog that preserves our voices and thoughts so that my mom can read it whenever she feels lonely. It's no substitute for a phone conversation or a meeting, but I believe there is a power in words that reassures, comforts, and heals. The goal is for us to post as often as possible about our days, as this seems to be a good way (at least, to me at the moment) to rebuild our connection and reaffirm our presence to each other in the depths of absence. It's really also because I feel like I am better at recounting my day in this format; phone calls are nice but I also run the risk of feeling tired and grumpy during the call...
This might be a strange way to do things, but writing helps me to calm down when I review my day, and I hope it will help my mom to work through her thoughts and feelings when I cannot be there for her. While slower than text messaging, I think blogging like this poses more benefits:
- Putting thoughts into words helps us to understand ourselves and each other better
- A joint project is a great way to rebuild/strengthen our connection
- This establishes a unique feature of our relationship as mother and daughter (this is a project that only we have)
- This blog is a manifestation of the promise that we have each other to rely on and to listen to
- I can share about my day in detail more comfortably here (unlike through text messaging) so my mom can see everything
